....getting back into the art thing for a moment....this has been posted before, but I thought it was appropriate for this week's Illustration Friday theme: Play
Pencil Drawing - size 2.5"x3.5" Artist Trading Card

There were quite a few opinions regarding this issue. Some of those who voiced opinions stated with great conviction that they believed these congregations shouldn't "hoard" money, but should be using it to further the Kingdom of God. It was pointed out that there are some churches in the area who are unable to pay their pastors while these other larger churches sat on big bank accounts.Matthew 6:19-21
Today is the day I've been waiting for -- for several weeks. Today was the culmination of much hard work, sorting through DOZENS of boxes in our garage (a.k.a. THE WAREHOUSE), preparing for today --THE YARD SALE!
Have I mentioned how much I dislike yard sales? Shopping at yard sales is one thing. I'm an expert at that and it's one of my favorite activities. However, HOSTING a yard sale is quite another story. I hate hosting yard sales. It seems that after weeks of unpacking, sorting, arranging and pricing we should have received a lot more fiscal compensation than we did. Compared to working a full-time job and receiving a paycheck...well, there's just no comparison. Yard sales are a lot of physical work and I'm exhausted. Have I mentioned how much I dislike yard sales?
Something happened at the yard sale today which was very upsetting. I was selling our wares, minding my own business, when a car pulled up and two women and a child got out of the car. Immediately upon seeing these individuals, (who happened to be Muslim in traditional dress), two other customers commented to me that I needed to really watch these people because they've been known to "five-finger discount" items and probably they had deep pockets in their clothing which would enable them to steal many items. I was a bit shocked at hearing these comments and marveled that someone would have the audacity to judge someone simply based on their appearance or ethnic group.
What was more upsetting to me was that I found myself watching these women much more closely than I did any of the other customers present at the sale. Of course, they did not steal anything, in fact were very friendly and polite. And the little girl who was with them was absolutely beautiful with a head of dark, curly hair, a beautiful smile and a pair of the biggest brown eyes that I've ever seen on a child. So why did I find myself watching their every move? Had I not been told by the previous customers that I should "look out" for them, I never would've given them another thought. Instead, I would've spent more time noticing how beautiful the little girl was instead of wondering what they may try to steal.
After all --we are all created in God's image. We're all the same. We all have the opportunity to become His children. We all put our pants on one leg at a time... (I hadn't thought that I had a problem in the area of knowing that we're all the same, but there seems to be a central theme in what the Lord has been teaching me lately. Refer to my previous post.
Oh...the power of the tongue. God's Word tells us that we have the power of life and death in our tongue. How true that is. In terms of spiritual anatomy, the tongue is directly wed to the heart, and it is the heart that motivates and manipulates the tongue for good or evil, to bless or curse.
Jesus understood this very well. In Matthew 12:35-37, He said, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give an account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
My prayer today is that I may always think before I speak. May my words not be used to bring condemnation on another for no good reason.
--Proverbs 3:30

Psalm 52:8
Recently, I have been dealing with someone in my life who is rubbing me the wrong way. It seems like any communication I have with this person turns to conflict and turmoil and it's really been bothering me to the point that I'm thinking of breaking off contact altogether. But then today I listened to one of my CDs by Nichole Nordeman. On it was a song, entitled Wide Eyed.
When I met him on a sidewalk
He was preaching to a mailbox
Down on 16th Avenue
And he told me he was Jesus
Sent from Jupiter to free us
With a bottle of tequila and one shoe
He raged about repentance
He finished every sentence
With a promise that the end was close at hand
I didn't even try to understand
He left me wide eyed in disbelief and disillusion
I was tongue tied, drawn by my conclusions
So I turned and walked away
And laughed at what he had to say
Then casually dismissed him as a fraud
I forgot he was created in the image of my God
When I met her in a bookstore
She was browsing on the first floor
Through a yoga magazine
And she told me in her past life
She was some plantation slave's wife
She had to figure out what that might mean
She believes the healing powers of her crystals
Can bring balance and new purpose to her life
Sounds nice
She left me wide eyed in disbelief and disillusion
I was tongue tied, drawn by my conclusions
So I turned and walked away
And laughed at what she had to say
Then casually dismissed her as a fraud
I forgot she was created in the image of my God
Not so long ago, a man from Galilee
Fed thousands with His bread and His theology
And the truth He spoke
Quickly became the joke
Of educated, self-inflated Pharisees like me
And they were wide eyed in disbelief and disillusion
They were tongue tied, drawn by their conclusions
Would I have turned and walked away
And laughed at what He had to say
And casually dismissed Him as a fraud
Unaware that I was staring at the image of my God
Those lyrics speak volumes, don't they? After I listened to the song, the Lord very gently reminded me that this person with whom I'm in conflict was created in His image. ...busted.
As Christians, it is so important to remember that no matter what situation we are involved with in dealing with other human beings on this planet that God created us ALL in His image. He loves us all equally. The same. No favorites. Who am I to think that I may be better than someone else? I'm not. My prayer today is that God will change my heart --to make it more like His so that I may view everyone through His eyes with His heart and His compassion. May I ever be mindful of my attitude toward others and strive to be Christlike in all my dealings with others.
May everyone see Jesus in me and may I search to find the good in others --even if there is much to sort through to get there.
This is the priceless look on Olivia's face when we wheeled her new Dora bicycle into the living room on her fourth birthday.
'Happy Birthday to You,
A Happy Birthday to You.
May you feel Jesus near
Every day of the year.
A Happy Birthday to you
A Happy Birthday to you.
And the best year you've ever had!

Can you tell I HATE housecleaning?! As I mentioned in a previous post --we're hosting a Home Group for our church on Friday and I HAVE to have at least a path through the living room...I really need to get busy and clean!
Oh look, right outside my window are the birdfeeders. Presently there is a Red Wing Blackbird, a Rose-Breasted Grosbeak, Two Yellow Goldfinches, a Chickadee and a Sparrow eyeing me because the feeders are empty....hhmmmm....vaccuum the carpet? feed the birds? --It's a no brainer! I'm outta here to feed the birds!!

Today I'm procrastinating. What else is new? We just returned from vacation and already my house is a mess. How did one small child ever accumulate so many toys? Toys strewn all over the place --every surface covered. But it's not just the toys...my art supplies have spilled out into the living room...and into the dining room...and into the kitchen. And I see a pair of Randy's socks next to the chair in the living room.
We're hosting a small group meeting or cell group or home group or whatever you want to call it on Friday evening. Which means, I can no longer put it off any longer --I have to clean my house. Thus far today, I've managed to telephone three people from my past --for very good reasons. One was to find the name of a book which a friend needs to use as a reference. The other was to find out if the number stored in my telephone was indeed their correct number and the third and most important was to call a friend from my former church home group to ask her for one of my favorite recipes.
Darlene used to serve these meatballs frequently at home group meetings. They are simple and easy. I thought I'd share the recipe with you all because that will require me to spend more time typing and less time cleaning my house!!
Darlene's Meatballs:
1 12 oz. jar of chili sauce (any favorite brand)
1 10 oz. jar of grape jelly (again, any favorite brand)
2 lbs ground chuck.
Mix the jelly and chili sauce together - bring to a boil.
Make walnut size meatballs --place in the jelly/chili mixture and simmer until the meatballs are done.
Then you can put the whole shabang in a crock pot to keep them hot for serving on your buffet. Provide toothpicks so your guests can 'pierce' the meatballs and place them on their plates --and NEVER, EVER serve these on PAPER PLATES! Darlene always used her best dishes, china and crystal for us. I remember we would tease her weekly --telling her she needed to serve us on paper plates so that there were less dishes to do and less work for Steve! ;) But each week, we'd show up and she'd have a lavish table spread with all kinds of wonderful food. She spent alot of time and put a lot of love into her preparations. She always insisted that it was no trouble but we all knew that she worked hard all afternoon to prepare for the evening group.
At the end of the evening you could usually find Steve, sporting his favorite pair of Foghorn Leghorn slippers, busy loading the dishwasher. And often, at the end of the evening - Darlene would send us home with the leftovers -- perhaps a piece of her famous chocolate crazy dump cake --so moist and delicious --or a plate of my favorite cookies - Snicker Doodles.
We had some great times in that home group and those times are some of my fondest memories. The people in my group were like my second family. It's been probably five years since I've seen them --the last time being my wedding day. We are living in another town now and haven't had the opportunity to travel back. One of these days I will have to make the trip and visit.
But today - I have to clean my house to prepare for hosting my new group. I'm praying that the Lord will knit our hearts and lives together - much in the same way he did my previous group. I trust He will. He is faithful. All the time. Of that, I'm sure!
Thanks Darlene - for the recipe - and the memories - and your love! I miss you my friend!
Okay --no more procrastinating...."Olivia, let's have some fun and clean the house!"

Being a stay-at-home Mom, I'm no longer out in the work force - so my contact with others is limited to my family and church friends. I've prayed that I will be able to minister to others and lead them to the Lord, but knowing that my contact is limited...I often wonder if I'm reaching my full potential in the area of evangelism.
As I'm browsing through the blogs, it's amazing how the Lord will lead me to someone's space and I'll read the words..."please pray for..." What a blessing and honor it is to be able to pray for others --even though we don't know one another and perhaps will never meet this side of heaven. I'm counting on one day, after I reach my eternal home, asking the Lord to show me how my prayers have impacted the hearts and lives of others. I have a feeling that we'll be very surprised to learn that our prayers have impacted others far more than we can ever realize.
So, may I encourage all Christians reading this post; take some time to say a prayer for those whose blogs you read. Many share situations in their lives which need lifted up. Don't neglect the Holy Spirit's prompting when He tells you to pray! I guarantee you'll be blessed in return!!

A few moments after I awoke, our three year old daughter bounced into the bathroom announcing that she wanted a smiley face pancake for breakfast. "...Just a minute, I'll make you some breakfast just as soon as I take my medicine." As I popped my "happy pill" and my "high blood pressure pill" and my "cholesterol-reducing pill", I thought to myself that there are days when I think I'm just too old to be a toddler's Mom. It is true, after all, that most of my friends who are my age are enjoying being grandparents. Or at least their kids are in school and out of diapers. Something which I wonder if it will happen simultaneously in our household as Olivia STILL hasn't mastered the whole potty thing and she's going to be four in one month. I have visions of packing a pull-up in her school lunch bag. (ugh.) Like I said, some days, I just feel like I'm too old for all of this!
A few hours after breakfast, after I unplugged the toilet, wiped up spilled juice, tried to balance what little money is left in the checkbook, helped Olivia blow her nose ten times, started to clean the kitchen and was interupted several times (deciding that it's my birthday, so maybe I just won't do the dishes until tomorrow...) and glanced sideways at our wedding photo - I chuckled to myself as I thought back to the years when I was younger and a little more care-free. In just the five short years I've been married, I've gone from "the most beautiful bride anyone has ever seen with a waist 'this' big" (to quote my cousin) to a middle-aged Mom of a toddler wondering whatever happened to her waist.
I sat down briefly to check my email. What's this? - an email from my dear husband, part of which reads, "...until she rose to look into the mirror. To peer at the image of a woman now one year older. A bit worn from the stress of being part of a business family and the mother of an active three year old; yet strikingly beautiful to her husband..."
Wow. Tears filled my eyes as my heart melted and I fell in love with Randy all over again. This was a time when he got it - just right.
...."Mommy! Puhleeeze come and fill my sippy cup! I want Orange-Strawberry-Banana Juice!" "Okay Olivia, I'm coming!" (smile) Happy Birthday to me.

Habakkuk lived during one of Judah's most critical periods. His country had fallen from the heights of Josiah's reforms to the depths of violent treatment of its citizens, oppressive measures against the poor, and collapse of the legal system. The world around Judah was at war, with Babylonia rising to ascendancy over Assyria and Egypt. The threat of invasion from the north added to Judah's internal turmoil.
In the beginning of the book, Habakkuk is overwhelmed by the circumstances around him. He believes that God has removed Himself from the situation and is nowhere to be found. After crying out and asking the Lord several questions Habakkuk says, "I will stand my watch and set myself on the rampart, and watch to see what He will say to me. And what I will answer when I am corrected." Then the Lord answered Habakkuk and said: "Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry." (chapter 2:1-3)
Having completed his questioning, Habakkuk stands like a sentinel to await his answer from God.
How can we apply this to our lives today? God requires that we make our relationship with Him our highest priority, that we bring our deepest questions and turmoils before Him, expecting His answers and guidance. Set aside a regular time and place that is holy to the Lord. Spend time listening for His word as you read, study, and mediate on Scripture. Be faithful in daily prayer. Document those things the Lord speaks to you or quickens to your heart. Record biblical promises He makes alive to you, and hold fast to them, knowing they will come to pass.
The book of Habakkuk gives the account of a spiritual journey, telling of one man's pilgrimmage from doubt to worship. The difference between the beginning of the book and the end of the book is striking. Habakkuk reminds us that the question, "Why?" can, should and must be asked. His circumstances demanded that he ask God about the apparent reign of unrighteousness around him. Because he believed in God, he believed that God had an answer to his problem. Habakkuk teaches that it's possible to rise above circumstances and even to rejoice in them, by focusing on God who stands above all. Habakkuk does not deny his problems, nor does he treat them lightly; instead, he finds God sufficient in the midst of his troubles.
When all the circumstances of our life present a negative picture - in failure and loss or when the natural reaction would be grief or complaint --this is the time to put faith in God and in His Word. Then we can see through God's eyes to the final glorious outcome. This brings worship and praise even before our circumstances have changed. Determine to praise and worship and thank God for His faithfulness, no matter how devastating the circumstances. Look with the eye of faith at God's plan for the future.

Knowing that she hasn't spent time seeking God in this matter, I'm not convinced that she's hearing from God. There is no shortcut to spiritual understanding. You have to learn to walk with God and to know His voice; otherwise, you will mistake your own voice for His. You even may be fooled by the voice of Satan, or you may hear the clamoring voice of the world. It is so easy to get these voices mixed up. Usually, God speaks to us in a still, small, quiet voice. See I Kings 19:11-13: “And He said, Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord. And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire [a sound of gentle stillness and] a still, small voice. When Elijah heard the voice, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. And behold, there came a voice to him and said, What are you doing here, Elijah?" - Amplified Bible
It takes time, prayer, and waiting on God to hear His voice.
How do we succeed in hearing God's voice? By spending time with God. The ultimate is not merely to get direction from God; the ultimate is to know God. God can make it difficult for us to get into His presence because He wants to see if we truly will expend the spiritual energy and exercise necessary to do so. Will we stop certain sins? Will we get rid of things that hinder us? Will we truly seek Him with all of our hearts?
Some people only want a quick fix -- "God, tell me how to make money on this business deal, please. See You next time!" And then that is the end of it. But God wants to be treated with the reverence and deference that His nature warrants. He wants to change us, not merely give us quick answers to difficult problems. We will never be changed unless we come into His presence, spend time with Him, and allow Him to purify us from our sinful nature.

In Philippians 4:19, Paul says, "And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus."
This verse tells us that God will supply our need by a distinct and definite measure, "according to His riches." In declaring this, God makes clear that He is not stingy when it comes to provision. His "riches" encompass all of creation, so there is nothing you need that He cannot provide! Do not misquote or misread this verse. It does not say that God shall supply your needs: it says that He shall supply your need. That includes everything at once, and all of it is adequately covered because He does it according to His riches. This verse cannot be lifted out of the Bible. It underwrites and relates to everything the Scriptures tell us to do in order to prosper. If we do what the Bible tells us to do, then God will provide abundantly.
All we must do is to Fully Rely On God. He will meet our need --not always our wants but our NEED.
Are you trusting God today to meet your need? Don't lose faith. He is always faithful!
Here's my latest Artist Trading Card - created for Illustration Friday's theme - Under the Sea. I used my "artist's license" to have this guy swimming in the RED Sea!
Last evening, Randy said to Olivia, "Come on, Olivia, I have a big surprise for you!"...and then took her on her first boat ride of this season. The first of what I know will be many! I grabbed the camera and took some photos from our bedroom balcony/deck, then came back in the house and began to paint. After sitting for a few moments, I decided that my painting could wait...and precious moments spent with my dear husband and daughter could never be regained once past...so, I put my paints and brushes away and went out and joined them for a wonderful evening on our pond.
We had a wonderful, relaxing time and I'm so glad I chose to join them! Here they are, getting ready to dock the boat.
Here's an Artist Trading Card for this week's Illustration Friday theme.
I'm not really a big fan of Tattoos. I don't mind if others put art on their bodies --I just prefer to keep my art on paper and canvas!
But, if I were going to choose something - it would be fashioned after some undersea life. I've always been fascinated with the creatures that live beneath the surface of our waters and envy my brother-in-law who is working toward his Master Diver's certification. I'm sure that the world he sees is beyond description!
So --here's my submission for this week's Illustration Friday --Sea Life --it could be a tattoo...no?
I had fun with this ATC ----especially considering my *love* of exercise. ahem.
Everybody --go touch your toes --or your knees!
I've always loved the Praying Mantis. They're so gentle --never scurrying away when encountered. They're fascinating to look at and to hold.
And the female --after it mates --bites off the head of the male! ha!
I think that's why I admire them so much! Come on...admit it...there are days when you'd like to bite off your husband's head! teehee!
