On the Pond

On the Pond, originally uploaded by beyondhope.

Last evening, Randy said to Olivia, "Come on, Olivia, I have a big surprise for you!"...and then took her on her first boat ride of this season. The first of what I know will be many! I grabbed the camera and took some photos from our bedroom balcony/deck, then came back in the house and began to paint. After sitting for a few moments, I decided that my painting could wait...and precious moments spent with my dear husband and daughter could never be regained once past...so, I put my paints and brushes away and went out and joined them for a wonderful evening on our pond.

We had a wonderful, relaxing time and I'm so glad I chose to join them! Here they are, getting ready to dock the boat.

Yahoo! My Internet is Back!

After not having access to the internet for almost two weeks --we finally were able to get our replacement satellite modem commissioned and receiving a signal! YEAH!

I received 1307 emails while offline. I won't be reading them all.

I've missed TWO illustration Friday topics...gotta catch up on those....

I've missed reading my favorite blogs -- Rebekah's Blog and A Sojourner's Journey. And the author of A Sojourner's Journey almost threw in the towel while I was gone! What is up with that?! Fortunately, she came to her senses and is back blogging again!

I'm WAY behind on my Artist Trading Card trading....

But --while away from the internet I gained a whole new appreciation for sitting around the house in the evening working puzzles in my Soduko book and rubbing my husband's feet. Okay --goodbye stinky feet! --Hello Internet!!!

I Stand Corrected

Okay....my brother-in-law read my previous post and has graciously corrected me on his "status" as a diver.

Here's his comment: "The Divemaster said...
Ahhh, master diver? Actually, I'm both a PADI Master Scuba Diver and a PADI Divemaster. I'm working on instructor certification."

Here's how much I know about it --he dons a wet suit, a tank, a mask and some flippers and dives in the water to look at fish and stuff. ;)

Incidentally...it's something that I would consider trying if I were in better physical shape! I think I have too much blubber and would be way too bouyant --even with the weights to help me stay below the surface!

Anyway...my apologies to my dear brother-in-law! love ya Ken!

Illustration Friday: Tattoo: Sea Life

Sea Life, originally uploaded by beyondhope.

I'm not really a big fan of Tattoos. I don't mind if others put art on their bodies --I just prefer to keep my art on paper and canvas!

But, if I were going to choose something - it would be fashioned after some undersea life. I've always been fascinated with the creatures that live beneath the surface of our waters and envy my brother-in-law who is working toward his Master Diver's certification. I'm sure that the world he sees is beyond description!

So --here's my submission for this week's Illustration Friday --Sea Life --it could be a tattoo...no?

Don't Take Him for Granted

This morning in church, we were pleased to welcome a missionary guest. One of the stories he shared particularly touched my heart. As he lives and works in an area of high security, the names in this story have been changed --Bear in mind - this story is true - with the exception of the name changes.

For eight years Mark had been a soldier in Saddam's army - responsible for the annihilation of hundreds of thousands of people --burning villages, murders --horrendous acts. After his retirement from the army --he tried to go on with his life as normal - with his wife and four children, but was unable to escape the relentless guilt he felt for taking part in so many ruthless killings. For years, he searched everywhere - studying the Koran - and trying to find some way to free his mind of the guilt. He prayed to God and asked him to help him. Not long afterwards, while sleeping, he was awakened from his sleep with a start! "Mark, Mark, Mark, wake up!" He awoke to see a man standing before him. The man continued, "I am Yeshua, Messiah, Jesus - Follow Me!". Mark went back to sleep and when he got up the next day --there was no more guilt --he had such peace of mind - such freedom! Something he had never experienced before! He had accepted Jesus as Lord of his life. He had sought God - and found Him - because he was seeking with all of his heart.

Knowing that to share what had happened to him would mean certain estrangement from his wife and four children, and possibly death, he chose to keep his conversion to Christianity to himself. Over the course of the next year, he scrounged around in church dumpsters, looking for scraps of paper with Scripture or teachings which he would study and learn and then hide them so noone knew he possessed them. He was never able to share any of this wonderful peace with his family because in his country, and his former religion - to convert to Christianity, one would be retured to his or her immediate family and be killed by a father or brother. It would be considered an "honor death" - because he had dishonored the family by becoming a Christian.

Finally he was able to live with himself no longer. He had to tell his wife--whom he loved very deeply - knowing that when she found out, she would pack up the children, leave and divorce him. After making the decision to speak with her, he found her in the kitchen, preparing a meal, weeping with huge tears rolling down her cheeks. "Mary?" he asked, "what is wrong?" Mary replied, "Mark, I have something to tell you - but I know that if I tell you, you will most certainly take the children and leave and return me to my father who will kill me. Don't worry, I haven't committed adultery (a crime punishable by death in their culture) but I have to share with you that someone called to me and woke me up in the night and said, 'Mary, I am Yeshua, Messiah, Jesus - Follow Me.' Mark, He was real --and I have chosen to follow Him because in Him I have found a peace I have never known."

With that, Mark embraced his wife and started jumping and crying with joy - explaining to her that he, too, had been visited by Jesus and converted to Christianity. Now this family serves the Lord together --spreading the Good News of the Lord whenever they are able. Grateful for the new life they received.

Mark and Mary had been visited by the Lord --just like Saul, in the New Testament. Saul was responsible for the persecution and deaths of many Christians --but the Lord appeared to him and changed his life forever.

As my husband and I were sharing our thoughts about this family over dinner today --we both sat and sobbed. Can you imagine having to scrounge around in a dumpster to find a scrap of paper with God's Word written there --to memorize it and hide it away in your heart? Can you imagine not having free access to His Word? Can you imagine not being able to share with your friends and loved ones the reason for the wonderful peace you have in your heart, not being able to openly pray for them --or openly gather with other believers and worship ---for fear of your life?

I charge you today --don't take the Lord for granted. If you are privileged to be living in a country where there is freedom of religion, don't take that lightly. All over the world, there are those who must hide their faith --those who risk their lives daily for the cause of Christ. May we, as Christians, be ever aware and conscious of His presence. And may we do all that we can to tell others of His wonderful love.

DO NOT BEND - under ANY circumstances!

DO NOT BEND, originally uploaded by beyondhope.

I had fun with this ATC ----especially considering my *love* of exercise. ahem.

Everybody --go touch your toes --or your knees!

Illustration Friday - Insect

Praying Mantis, originally uploaded by beyondhope.

I've always loved the Praying Mantis. They're so gentle --never scurrying away when encountered. They're fascinating to look at and to hold.
And the female --after it mates --bites off the head of the male! ha!

I think that's why I admire them so much! Come on...admit it...there are days when you'd like to bite off your husband's head! teehee!

Illustration Friday --Tea

Here's my "doodle sketch" for this week's Illustration Friday Theme.
A simple drawing --from a different perspective. Enjoy!

An Amazing Artist --Is this the REAL thing?!

Someone recently pointed me in the direction of this artist, Julian Beever. I have been viewing his work with awe - especially his pavement drawings. Knowing that they are "temporary" works and they will fade away within a relatively short period of time, it's amazing to see the incredible detail that is depicted in his art. When you have a few moments - take some time to view his work. You'll be amazed!

Illustration Friday -- Song

This little pup is singing his heart out at the moon!
...an Artist Trading Card I created several days ago which I thought was appropriate for this week's theme. Enjoy!

A Lesson in Faith

The phone rang today. It was my stepdaughter, Stephanie, calling to say that she had just learned her grandmother has been diagnosed with breast cancer. After assuring her that I would be praying for her grandmother and asking her to be sure to give me regular updates, I handed the phone to Olivia - knowing that by talking to her youngest half sister, Stephanie would be cheered up.

A few minutes into the conversation Olivia asked Stephanie why she was sad. Stephanie replied, "My grandmother is sick." Olivia said, "Well, we'll just have to pray for her - okay? Hold on. Dear Jesus, please help Stephanie's grandmother feel all better. In Jesus' name, Amen." She then said to Stephanie. "Okay - now you don't have to worry about a thing because Jesus is in charge." She then went on to talk about something else. As far as Olivia was concerned, the situation was handled.

Oh...the faith of a child. So matter-of-fact. So certain. No worries. Jesus is in charge. May we all learn from Olivia today and trust the Lord with total abandon - not worrying about anything that we lay at His feet - because Jesus is in charge!

Photo Friday -- Theme: Baby

This week's theme for Photo Friday is "Baby". Here she is...our little Olivia --when she was a baby! Today she's almost four! ...sigh...she is growing much too fast for my liking!

Today's Thought:

...this quote appeared on one of my favorite blogs today:

“We may ignore, but we can nowhere evade, the presence of God. The world is crowded with Him. He walks incognito. The real labour is to remember, to attend. In fact, to come awake. Still more, to remain awake.”
–Letters to Malcolm: Chiefly on Prayer

Olivia's Art Project

This morning, immediately upon awakening, Olivia had to make "Jonah" the Whale. She didn't want to eat breakfast, didn't want to watch Noggin, didn't want to do anything besides an art project - Jonah the Whale - with "sprinkles" on him. (Sprinkles = glitter). I asked her if she talked about Jonah the Whale in church last night. Her reply - "No, we talked about the Mud Guy." "The Mud Guy?"... "Yeah, Jesus put mud on the guy's eyes and then he could see that his house was dirty and he needed to run the suck-up sweeper." ?!...out of the mouths of babes. Here's Olivia's art project: Jonah the Whale:

Illustration Friday - Simple (Submission #2)

This is a small painting I did years ago - 1997.
Entitled "A Pot of Geraniums" --just a simple pot sitting on the window ledge.

Self Portrait Tuesday 2-14-06

It's Wednesday.
I'm a day behind in posting for Self-Portrait Tuesday.
What else is new?

Here's my submission:
The Theme: All of Me
We're supposed to be capturing ALL --warts and all.
As I said before, I don't have any warts.
So --I took a photo of my teeth.
If I could - I would change my teeth.
They're yellow - there are two on the top that are slighly crooked.
Up against my RED lipstick which I applied for the Valentine's Day dinner last night --they REALLY looked yellow. So - I had to wear a different color lipstick. I applied and wiped off seven different shades before I settled on the same one that I always wear. It looked the best. Why mess with a good thing?
Okay --here's my TEETH PORTRAIT --altered, of course. My teeth really don't look THAT BAD!
